Having a Shower
Yesterday was my daughter's baby shower. I know that, traditionally, families aren't supposed to give showers, but I also know that none of her friends were in a position to do so; she's only 17 and her friends just don't have the resources to do it. But I also really wanted to do it for her. It was my extreme love for my daughter and desire to do something wonderful for her that inspired me.
Let me start by saying that I am not an entertainer. I want to stay in my own home with my own people/pets and surrounded by my own things. I don't like going out into the world too often (less so since my stroke last fall, since processing information is more difficult and I'm easily overloaded), and it is also overwhelming to me to put together anything social in my own space. I'm not a Martha. ("Socializing" via computer is good; I can turn it on and turn it off depending on my state of mind and whatever else I'm doing.)
It turned out really well, probably better than if all the invitees had actually shown up. As it was there were 11 of us (we'd invited 24) and it was the perfect size for conversation and lack of confusion.
Anyway, I'd planned a drawing for a prize, using the envelopes for the thank you notes that each guest completed when they arrived, one game, consumption of cake, the Gift Opening, and byebyetimetogohome. We had a great time! While waiting for a couple of late arrivals there was time to chat a bit, and get to know each other, and still time for all the activities.
The game I'd planned was one in which the we all (well, I didn't play) make a list of baby-related words using the first letter of the parents' names - in this case, Casey and Josh. There were some cute answers, and the discussion across the table just added to the fun. The one who got the most answers in common with Casey's list won. There were 3 who tied, so Casey drew one of the 3 for the prize.
I'd made the cake with a confetti cake mix and a fluffy white frosting. The baby's colors are blue and green, and the scheme is shapes. So I used colored sprinkles to make random circles on the cake. Not bad for a non-artist eh? :)
One of my other goals was to keep the cost to <$100. And by utilizing the dollar stores around town and making the cake myself, I was able to do so! In the end, it is the guests that really provide the party :).
So, in the end, all went well and I think a good time was had by all. It won't go down in the annals of baby shower history, but OTOH, I heard a lot of laughing and no complaints so that says something, right?

It doesn't have to be spectacular, it has to be FUN. And it sounds like it was. Way to go Granny.
ReplyDeleteOk, thought I said that it sounded wonderful, maybe it got lost when my site was lost.
